Warning
The following components are important safety items; improper handling of bearings may result in major repair expense or bodily injury as a result of wheel separation from vehicle. Consult manufacturer's service manual for specific detailed information.
Dismounting Instructions
1. Carefully raise and support the trailer so that the wheel and tire assembly is clear of the ground. (Use wheel chocks to prevent the vehicle from rolling and jack stands to support the vehicle, thus preventing accidental lowering.)
2. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
3. Remove the grease cap, cotter pin, nut and washer.
4. Side the outer bearing cone off the spindle.
5. The hub or hub and drum, can now be removed from the spindle. Carefully remove the hub so that the spindle is not damaged.
6. Remove the grease seal using a pry bar, taking care not to damage the bearing, withdraw the inner bearing cone.
7. Remove the inner and outer bearing cups from the hub by tapping from opposite sides of the bore with a blunt punch or other suitable drift. Rotate the tapping sequence, thereby preventing the cups from cocking in the hub. (Figure 1)
Assembly Instructions
1. Clean the hub thoroughly of grease and dirt using a suitable solvent.
2. Install the inner and outer bearing cups in the hub by using the old cup as a starring tool, then finish the installation by using a suitable drift or punch. Rotate the tapping sequence to prevent the bearing caps from cocking in the hub. Make sure the bearing cups are properly seated in the hub. Apply a thin coat of grease to the hub cavity to prevent rust.
3. Pack both bearing cones with the water resistant grease by working the grease thoroughly into the rollers. Keep the bearing cones clean after packing them. (Figure 2)
4. Insert the inner bearing cone into the bearing cup in the hub. Wipe a small amount of grease on the seal lips and install it into the hub using a wood block or seal driver. Make sure the seal is installed squarely and fully. (Figure 3)
5. Clean the axle spindle. Check for rough areas on the spindle that might prevent the bearings from seating properly. Lightly grease the spindle, taking care not to allow any foreign material on the braking surfaces.
6. Carefully install the hub on the spindle so that the seal or the bearings are not damaged in the process. Install the outer bearing cone, washer and the nut onto the spindle. While rotating the hub, tighten the nut to seat the bearings. Torque the nut to between 12 and 24 foot pounds.
